Here’s a set of wide-eyed Rainbow Owls and a mossy nest for them to snuggle up in. Of course you don’t have to stick with the rainbow theme. These little guys would look good in any color combinations. The owls and the leaves that decorate the nest are made with light worsted weight/DK yarn (worsted weight would work just as well) while the nest itself is crocheted up in lightening fast time with super bulky yarn. I like the contrast between the two different weights of yarn. The heavy yarn looks kind of like bark so the nest really did end up looking like it was straight out of the forest. I think you’ll agree this family of owls look very comfy in there!
I’ve nicknamed the green owl Kevin as he definitely enjoys being home alone!
Have fun with this pattern but please don’t re-publish it in any way. I am happy for you to make and sell the finished articles from both my free and paid for patterns. A credit for Moji-Moji Design as the pattern creator would make me very happy and a link to my blog or my Ravelry shop (listed in the sidebar >) would be much appreciated! In order to keep the handmade love going please note that wholesale manufacturing of items from any of my patterns is not permitted. Thank you 🙂

Thank for the free pattern I love owls and these Nested Rainbow Owls are adorable. I plan on making them for myself and as a gift for a friend. Do you have any Dolphin patterns? I am also interested in dolphins for a friend.
July 6, 2014 at 9:52 pm
Hi Sarah, I don’t have a dolphin pattern yet, but I’ll put it on my to do list. I’m glad you like the owls, I hope your friend will too!

Would it help if I emailed them to you? I’m not sure how things work for an Ipad and I haven’t heard of notability. It’s tough going keeping up with all the latest technology sometimes!
July 13, 2014 at 10:27 pm
Actually, I just re-saved it in notability on my phone and iPad. 🙂 thank you though!!!

Amazing pattern! I’ve tried several owl patterns but this is by far my favourite. Thank you so much for sharing it so generously! 🙂
August 2, 2014 at 12:11 pm
My pleasure Anna, Enjoy!
August 5, 2014 at 11:51 pm
I absolutely love your little owls. I want to make this for my granddaughter who loves owls. Could you possibly tell me what yarn you used. I am having trouble finding the right colors in a light weight. Thank you so much. You are amazingly talented.
August 7, 2014 at 10:30 pm
Hi Kim, thanks for your nice comments! 🙂 I used a selection of double knitting (light worsted weight in the US) yarns. My favorite brands are Patons Fab and Robin DK. You could substitute a worsted weight yarn if you can get hold of them easier, just take the hook size up to a size G (4mm). Have fun making them!

Hi Patti, I don’t have a video of my own but I think this one by Bernat will help make things clearer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc8ksDP9oII
My pattern only calls for 2 sc to be made in the last chain. I prefer to make one sc in the front and 1 sc in the back loop of this last chain, but it doesn’t matter exactly where they go as long as they are both in this chain. Once you have finished this round place your marker and continue in a spiral. You will find that this gives you a straight top edge for your owl. I hope that helps!

Hi Jenny, Yes you may certainly share my pattern on your website with a link to my blog. I hope your readers will enjoy making the owls. Thanks for asking!
August 23, 2014 at 5:16 pm
I’m interested to know what yarn you used, especially for the nest – it is so perfect for this project. What a beautiful pattern you have made and so many helpful tips included as well. Thank you!
August 25, 2014 at 7:25 pm
Hello Millie, I used Patons Caressa Express for the nest. The colours were 4422 for the main part and 4423 for the darker trim around the top and bottom. I hope that helps. I hope you manage to track it down 🙂

September 10, 2014 at 8:07 pm
I’m glad you enjoyed making the owls! Great idea to do a doorstop too.
September 29, 2014 at 1:34 am
Hi 🙂 I was wondering were you bought the eyes for the owls? I’ve been looking everywhere and can’t find the exact ones
Thanks
September 29, 2014 at 8:46 am
Hi Rachel,
I’m not sure if you are in the UK, US or elsewhere. I am UK based and usually buy my craft eyes from an online shop called Craft Bits http://www.craftbits.co.uk/eyes.htm For the owls I bought the clear eyes and then coloured in the backs with sharpie pens so I could match the eyes to the yarn better. If you are in the US then I highly recommend Suncatcher craft eyes, for sheer variety (they even have glow in the dark ones!) Suncatcher posts to anywhere in the world so if you are buying enough it might be worth paying the extra postage even if you’re not US based. Find them here http://www.suncatchereyes.com/
I hope that helps. Happy owl making! Janine x
September 30, 2014 at 3:30 am
Thanks for the info.Just ordered some clear eyes. Can’t wait to try coloring them myself!
September 30, 2014 at 8:40 am
Glad it was useful. Build the colour up in two or three layers, allowing to dry each time and you’ll have some great results!
September 30, 2014 at 4:49 pm
Oh that’s why yours look so great! What a super idea. Thank you so much for sharing this information.
September 30, 2014 at 4:59 pm
My pleasure 🙂
October 6, 2014 at 10:44 am
Hi Alexandra, thanks for asking but I only make patterns at the moment. Sorry!
October 8, 2014 at 1:02 pm
These are so cute! I want to make them for my niece. I looked at the eyes on the Suncatcher sight. What size did you use for these owls?
October 8, 2014 at 3:17 pm
They are 12 mm eyes. I hope your niece likes her owl family!
October 9, 2014 at 1:33 pm
Thank you!
October 15, 2014 at 10:39 am
I will keep a look out on your blog to see a picture of your owl. I hope he’s turning out well! It would be lovely if you could translate the pattern to Catalan. I would put it up on my free patterns page alongside the others. Thank you! I’ll email you about it 🙂

October 27, 2014 at 10:18 am
How exciting! These owls would certainly look quite at home in any nursery. I hope you have fun with the pattern and congratulations to your friend 🙂
October 28, 2014 at 8:45 am
Hi, where did you get your wool because I think the colours are great and would really love to copy it, thanks!
October 28, 2014 at 10:51 am
I mainly use acrylic yarns in a light worsted weight (dk). These owls are mostly either Robin DK, or Patons fab DK yarns. There are so many choices of colours, and I love their intensity. They’re inexpensive too and both brands are widely available here in the UK. Any yarn shop will stock them or ebay has a wide choice. As for specific colours, most of them were made from oddments, so I’m not sure, but I think the owls work best when they are two distinct tones of the same colour. Hope that helps a bit!
October 29, 2014 at 10:28 am
Thanks so much!
November 4, 2014 at 1:42 am

Those are so nice! Thank you very much. Greetings from Iceland 🙂
December 27, 2014 at 5:43 pm
Thanks Unnur. My son just went to Iceland on a geology trip with his college. He said it was amazing, and he got to see the Northern lights too! He took loads of photos. I am quite envious of his experience. You live in a beautiful land!
January 5, 2015 at 4:36 am
Where is the best place to find the eyes? I love the colored eyes bit not sure where to find them. Thanks.
January 5, 2015 at 3:03 pm
Hi Alicia, I buy clear safety eyes (these are 12mm) and then colour in the backs with sharpie pens, so I can get just about any colour I want that way. You can also paint the backs with acrylic or nail polish for a more opaque look. As to the suppier, Suncatcher craft eyes have a great variety http://www.suncatchereyes.com/. I’m UK based so I also use http://www.craftbits.co.uk/eyes.htm I hope that all helps!
January 8, 2015 at 1:00 am

Gorgeous 🙂
January 8, 2015 at 1:54 pm
I only have this in crochet at the moment. Sorry! Glad you think they’re awesome though!
January 8, 2015 at 1:59 pm
I haven’t knitted for a while now, having been entirely obsessed with crocheted amigurumi since I discovered it a few years ago, but I will see about a knitted pattern when I get a bit more time on my hands. I was thinking of branching out into knitting patterns designs sometime this year… if only I can put my crochet hook down for long enough!! I’ll let you know when that happens 🙂
January 11, 2015 at 3:07 pm
I’m the other way round with my knitting needles, so I totally understand. I’ll persevere with the crocheting but keep my fingers crossed you feel inspired to create a knitted version! 😉
January 8, 2015 at 2:01 pm
Only crochet at the moment, and quite a few deadlines for crochet patterns coming up – but I’ll see what I can do when I get the chance to ditch the hook for the needles!
January 8, 2015 at 2:02 pm
Hi Vicki, this is a crochet pattern actually. It’s your lucky day!
January 9, 2015 at 1:06 pm
I just love owls. I’ll try it immediately. thanx
January 9, 2015 at 10:33 pm
I love how your cat is sitting in the nest looking cross, maybe he thinks you made it a bit small! Thanks for the pattern, the owls are so cute.
January 10, 2015 at 12:25 am
Yes my cat thinks the world revolves around him so I think you are right on the button there!
January 11, 2015 at 12:29 pm
I don’t have any knitting patterns at the moment, but there seems to be a demand so I’ll see what I can do in the near future. Keep an eye out on my blog for further developments!
January 16, 2015 at 12:03 am
Sorry Catherine, I’m only making patterns at the moment, but I can ask around and see if any crocheters I know are currently making and selling them. I’ll let you know if I find anyone.
January 19, 2015 at 3:24 am
Hi, I love these little owls, I have already made 4 to send to my daughter. I hope it’s ok to share your Facebook page on my page. I showed the little owls to the other NAVY MOMS and they just loved them.
January 19, 2015 at 12:54 pm
Thanks for sharing, it’s always appreciated. I hope your daughter loves her handmade owls. Feel free to post a picture on my Facebook page if you want to show them off! I hope all the Navy Moms will be taking up crochet now!
January 23, 2015 at 4:48 pm
Thank you so much for this pattern! These candy colored little guys are so adorable! The only challenge I’ve found though is keeping them from my cat lol 🙂 Also, where did you get the red color yarn from? I love the watermelon-y shade of it, but I can’t find it anywhere 🙁
January 24, 2015 at 11:58 am
Cats! I know just what you mean. I have four lively moggies here who all love wrecking my crochet – in a playful way of course! The colours I used were all oddments from my stash and all the oddments are unbanded now. Sorry I can’t help you more, but if I do come across that shade again I’ll let you know 🙂
January 23, 2015 at 7:20 pm
Thank you for the pattern, the alternate lines of pattern being on different backgrounds makes it much easier to read in artificial light.

March 16, 2015 at 4:16 am
Thank you! This is perfect! My DIL is expecting my first grandchild this fall — she loves owls and wants to decorate the nursery in owls. This is the cutest thing I’ve found so far! (And will look great with the Owl Obsession blanket I am currently making for her!)
March 16, 2015 at 2:13 pm
How lovely! Congrats on your soon to be grandchild! The owl theme sounds fabulous for a nursery! It sounds like you will be kept quite busy!
March 18, 2015 at 5:17 pm
Question: I am starting the head and body. The pattern states to ch 13, sc in second ch, how does this work when crocheting in a spiral? Dumb question I bet, but I’m kinda new at this. Thank you
March 19, 2015 at 1:03 am
It may look a little confusing on the first round. As you will be crocheting down one side of the chain first and then rotating the work and crocheting down the opposite side of the chain you will end up back where you started. Then you just keep crocheting, going round and round until the end of the pattern. What you end up with is a spiral structure with a flat seam at the top. I hope that makes sense!
April 8, 2015 at 6:31 am
merci, c’est un très joli modèle.

I love your pattern!! I was hoping to get your permission to sell these for my fundraiser. I am walking in Avon 39: The Walk to End Breast Cancer this summer and I am trying to raise $1,800 for the cause. Please let me know. Thanks!!!
May 18, 2015 at 4:26 pm
Hi Crystal, yes you are very welcome to sell the owls, or anything else made from my patterns. I give full permission for either charity or personal sales as I think that’s only fair when you have put all the time in to make the finished product. Good luck with your fundraising for such a great cause!
